By way of background, on 1 February the ASA upheld a complaint about a radio advertisement broadcast on behalf of Lottoland; the complainant challenged whether the advertisement misleadingly implied that Lottoland were offering the opportunity to take part in a lottery as opposed to offering bets on the outcome of that lottery. Gamblers' enduring illusions of control IOC may be one reason why they continue to gamble in the face of sustained losses. If gamblers persist in the belief that they have special skills, knowledge and other advantages when gambling, they may be able to convince themselves it is worth doing again.
Maintaining an IOC requires selective attention of the illusion supporting moments during the construction of an evaluation of a gambling session. Test the hypothesis that selected moments, specifically the moment of the highest win and the last moment of the gaming session, explain the retrospective evaluation of the session for gamblers high in the illusion of control. A total of and 35 experienced gamblers were recruited from gambling venues and participated in two studies by gambling on 20 occasions on coin toss outcomes.
Participants were asked to evaluate their enjoyment of the gambling experience they had just completed, and completed an IOC Beliefs Questionnaire designed to measure the extent to which they believe they are good at influencing gambling outcomes. Gamblers with a high IOC use the largest win in their evaluation when they lose.
This is consistent with the motivated selective attention hypothesis. Non-threatened gamblers, those with a low IOC or winners, use the final outcome as the determinant of their evaluation of the gaming session. The results suggest that instead of altering an important characteristic of self, gamblers instead reflect on the moment of a gambling episode that does not threaten, and in fact supports, their ability to find patterns in random events.

Online-gambling opponents say they've spotted ads promoting online betting on children's game sites and alongside articles about gambling addiction. They're trying to use this to convince Congress and the Justice Department to reverse a decision that opened the door for states to permit internet gambling.
A source close to the legislative fight shared screenshots of casino advertising in places they say it doesn't belong. But the ads aren't actually targeting kids or gambling addicts. Instead, they're the kind that follow users around the internet, like, say a promotion for a hotel in San Francisco might keep appearing after someone searches for flights to the city.
They're called retargeting ads by the industry. A Business Insider search of the same pages screenshotted by the advocates turned up a totally different set of ads. That doesn't matter though to opponents of online gaming, who said the fact unrestricted advertising exists at all is a problem.
Blanche Lincoln, who works with the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling, a group backed by Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, compared the promotions to cigarette ads that are no longer permitted under law. The advertising part of it is exactly what hooks kids and seniors who are desperate, who are marginalized individuals and trying to feed a family. One advertising expert told Business Insider that the website where the ads appear is more at fault for their appearance than the online gambling advertiser whose ads appeared.
The issue received some attention in the British press late last year after similar ads were found because of loopholes in the United Kingdom's advertising laws. The UK's Committee of Advertising Practice has since set new regulations, which are to take effect next month. Meanwhile, a person who works in the online gaming industry describes the ads being passed around by anti-online gambling advocates was "a setup with no substance.
