What if we told you there's a game that has all the options and action of Omaha but with fewer swings? Irish poker is truly a mix of Texas Hold'em and Omaha Poker. Players start with four hole cards, as if playing Omaha, but must discard two cards after the flop.
The first player to the left of the dealer button posts the small blind and the second player to the left posts the big blind. Starting with the small blind four cards are dealt to each player. Action begins to the left of the big blind and continues around the table. The flop is dealt the same as in Omaha or Hold'em with three community cards face up. Another round of betting ensues starting with the active player closest to the left of the button.
In Irish Poker you want to enter the game with an Omaha mindset pre-flop. This means you're looking for starting hands with numerous possibilities. Board texture and flop action will go a long way in determining what moves you should make when discarding.

There are a handful of special moves that, when mastered, can make the difference between winning a little, and winning a lot. A check-raise in poker consists of checking when the action's on you, and raising after a player behind you has bet. The check-raise is a trapping move.
Check-raising can be done for two reasons. Either you are check-raising for value, to get more money into the pot when you think you have the best hand, or check-raising as a bluff, to make your opponent throw away the best hand. Since this is a beginner poker strategy series, moves like the check-raise must be handled with care.
Poker is a game of planning and the check-raise is a prime example. When you think you have the best hand you need to get as many chips into the pot as possible.
The better your hand, the more comfortable you should be putting all your chips at risk. Check-raising for value gives you another way to entice your opponent into putting money into the pot. By checking and signaling weakness your opponent will bet a wider range of hands, trying to use position to win the pot with weak holdings. By check-raising, you can either force your opponent into making a mistake by calling with the worst hand, or you can induce and all-in shove from drawing hands and second-best made hands.
But remember, check-raising is a powerful move and can force your opponent into laying down even moderately strong hands. So if you hold the nuts, be cautious of overplaying your hand and forcing your opponent into folding before putting all his money in the pot. Because even most beginner poker players know they should be continuation-betting the majority of the time when they raise preflop, you can turn the tables on them with a well-timed check-raise.
Texas hold 'em also known as Texas holdem , hold 'em , and holdem is a variation of the card game of poker. Two cards, known as the hole cards, are dealt face down to each player, and then five community cards are dealt face up in three stages.
The stages consist of a series of three cards "the flop" , later an additional single card "the turn" or "fourth street" , and a final card "the river" or "fifth street". Each player seeks the best five card poker hand from any combination of the seven cards of the five community cards and their own two hole cards. If a player's best five-card poker hand consists only of the five community cards and none of the player's hole cards, it is called "playing the board".
If you play the board on the river, then you can do no better than tie the other player s in the game if no player can make a better hand than the board represents, using either or both hole cards.
Players have betting options to check, call, raise, or fold. Rounds of betting take place before the flop is dealt and after each subsequent deal. Texas hold 'em is the H game featured in H. E and in H. In Texas hold 'em, as in all variants of poker , individuals compete for an amount of money or chips contributed by the players themselves called the pot. Because the cards are dealt randomly and outside the control of the players, each player attempts to control the amount of money in the pot based either on the hand they are holding, or on their prediction as to what their opponents may be holding and how they might behave.
The game is divided into a series of hands deals ; at the conclusion of each hand, the pot is typically awarded to one player an exception in which the pot is divided between two or more is discussed below. A hand may end at the showdown , in which case the remaining players compare their hands and the highest hand is awarded the pot; that highest hand is usually held by only one player, but can be held by more in the case of a tie.
