Starting Hand Selection
Sklansky Starting Hand Groups. In Texas Holdem, it is important to have good starting hand selection. This is important as it prevents you from entering pots with sub-standard hands, which could eventually lead to you losing a lot of money in the process.
It is true that any hand can win in Texas Holdem or poker in general for that matter , but the fact of the matter is that some hands will win more than others. So if we stick with the good hands, then we should see better results in the long run. Good Texas Holdem starting hands are typically hands like big pocket pairs and big connecting cards.
So some of the top starting hands would be:. This is obviously the top tier when it comes to starting hands, and if we were to only ever be dealt these starting hands we would be making a lot of money. In fact, if we folded every other hand that we were dealt and only played these hands, there is a fair chance that we would be winning money in the long run.
If we only ever played with this elite group of cards, we would be folding numerous hands along the way and missing out on other opportunities to win money. Even though these are the cream of the crop when it comes to starting hands, there are still other great hands out there that can win us a lot of money in the long run if we play them. At tables with the maximum amount of players — nine or ten, depending on the room — there will likely be more obstacles to avoid, while tables with fewer players will allow you to open up your game and try more aggressive tactics. Choosing which ones best suits your game will partly depend on the atmosphere at that table. If there is heavy action and your tendency is to play tight, you will probably want to lay low and wait for a big hand.
It also allows you to avoid making the many difficult decisions that usually come along with getting heavily involved in that style of play. On the other hand, a loose table gives you the opportunity to make a lot of money very quickly.
It also means there are going to be at least a couple players in almost every hand, possibly playing odd combinations of cards and building large pots, so there will be more money to be made. At a tighter table, it is usually advisable to loosen up your game a bit.
Sometimes, even with nine or ten people at a table, the game can go multiple rounds without any real money entering the pot. That gives you a chance to pick up multiple small pots and build your stack in preparation for the rarer large ones.
And by playing at a faster pace than your opponents, you will often force the game to open up, creating more opportunities for bigger money. Whether you tend to play a tight game, a loose game, or something in between, a smaller table almost forces you to play more starting hands.

I really like Apple Inc's Texas Hold'em app, the animation is awesome. Be warned, it's highly addictive. The graphics are nice and it has a very special feel to it. I only know Zynga Poker from Facebook, it's also nice, I will check out the iPhone app - seems a good idea to link it to the Facebook account.

Does it work well with iPhone 4? Do you think it will get updated to use iOS4 features? Or should I go another route. Contact Us iMore Top. All times are GMT The time now is
